Literacy

Literacy in kindergarten is primarily the development of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in English. The Tamil and Hindi alphabet is introduced to the children in the last term of KG II. Oral language of the children is developed through story-telling and singing songs. Small group activities ensure that the children experience a range of interactions which give them an opportunity to both listen to others and also express their thoughts. The kindergarten follows our in-house literacy scheme deriving the best from various well-established schemes. The literacy programme begins with the introduction of phonics and incorporates several hands-on activities and other techniques such as guided reading, shared reading, tracing patterns and so on, that systematically help the children acquire reading and writing skills. By the end of KG II, the goal is to ensure that children can fluently read age-appropriate books and also write with ease.
